Last year I slept on Nostalgic 64, the first full length from Denzel Curry’s since parting ways with SpaceGhostPurrp’s Raider Klan. When hearing it I soon realised my oversight. Denzel delivers machine gun lyrical dexterity combined with a mature ear when selecting his palette of beats. This far exceeds many of his peers who are of the same age (he was 18 at the time of release). In short then, he’s got bags of potential.
So with that in mind it’s exciting to see new material surface. Stadium Starship is lifted from his upcoming Planet Shrooms EP and is an ode to fallen comrades Tiarra Grant and Trayvon Martin. Denzel raps effortlessly over the codeine laced track supplied by The Pyrvmids. He peppers the beat with ease, switching gear with his flow at the 1 minute 30 mark. Lyrically he’s feeling cosmic: “I’ll phone you home with my bluetooth” and he sounds as if he’s reaching out through a televison set circa Poltergeist in between samples of news reports. Listen to the track below.
