CyHi The Prince returns with his 6th mixtape and first under the Kanye West helmed G.O.O.D Music umbrella. West acts as Executive producer on the project and his presence is felt throughout. Tunes fluctuate from the soulful (Is It Me) to straight up tribal (Mandela) with CyHi switching his flow accordingly with ease. Coretta is the young Georgia rapper’s version of Kanye’s romantic cut: White Dress: ‘I see you in my dreams. Either you a stranger or a wife, I don’t see you in-between’. CyHi showed initial potential on West’s ‘My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy’ track So Appalled in 2010 with a surprise star feature that had him standing tall with some rap heavyweights like Pusgha T and RZA. His ability to string together successions of picture perfect bars shines throughout the tape and his southern flow positions him closely to fellow Atlanta rapper Big K.R.I.T. On highlight Huey he shows his bravado, referencing his mentor’s track New God Flow and a nod to his own strict Baptist upbringing: ‘This that God flow, what they nailed Jesus to the cross for, and he came back three days after he died flow’. The track includes bars from his G.O.O.D music label mate King Louie, one of a handful of well-placed features on the tape. He was seemingly another cog in the machine on Kanye’s ‘Cruel Summer’ album in 2012. Fast forward a year and he was a major writing contributor on ‘Yeezus’ in 2013. Cydel Young starts 2014 by dropping his finest mixtape to date; it looks like the Prynce is ready to take the throne.
