Best New Mixtape: Vince Staples and Larry Fisherman – Stolen Youth LP

Ok so hardly a new mixtape as it’s two months old but I felt I had to give it a mention. Vince Staples has appeared so many times on tracks and had a star turn. Most notably an Odd Future affiliate (he’s a tour de force on Mike G’s Award Tour EP) he most recently appears all over Earl Sweatshirt’s Doris, arguably stealing the show on highlight ‘Hive’.

Now could be his turn. Teaming up with Mac Miller who is under the guise of ‘Larry Fisherman’, Stolen Youth LP finds the young rapper reflecting on his troubled past. Staples paints a vivid picture of his formative years and Miller’s dark and cloudy production (Like his most codeine orchestral on Macadellic) is the perfect backdrop for his storytelling. Track ‘Guns and Roses’ shows magnificent craftsmanship and maturity for a rapper who’s only 20  years old. Also featuring some great verses from Black Hippy’s Schoolboy Q and Ab-Soul you can download the tape here.

There’s a lot written about both but Earl Sweatshirt’s Doris and A$AP Ferg’s Trap Lord that came out this week but neither album disappoint either. It’s a great time to be into Hip Hop.
