Album Of The Week: Run The Jewels – EL-P & Killer Mike

It’s undoubtedly an exciting time to be a fan of hip hop. I was still reeling from Kanye’s abrasive sonic behemoth: Yeezus when dream team EL-P and Killer Mike have unleashed their collaboration Run The Jewels… for free. Like Yeezus this is another hip hop record that pushes the boundaries of the genre into unfamiliar and interesting territories. Fans of Killer Mike’s R.A.P. Music and EL-P’s Cancer 4 Cure (both released last year) will recognise EL-P’s authorial signature in the apocalyptic production palette.

I’ve seen Mike twice and EL-P once in the last few months and both are formidable forces live. After the EL-P show in Brighton my friend was left wide eyed and speechless and simply muttered the word: ‘Powerful’. Perfect summation, so I’m even more excited to hear the duo will be touring the record together imminently.

This is not your average mixtape, download and play loud.
