Ab-Soul may be one of the lesser known members of TDE’s Black Hippy Crew but he is definitely not to be overlooked. Those that heard his 2012 full length Control System will recognise his silky flow and imaginative rhyme patterns. It was an album full of highlights, often more politically charged than his other crew members, e.g. “Terrorist Threats” with Danny Brown. Here he teams up with Pittsburgh’s Mac Miller, who definitely has his moments (worth checking out his mixtape Macadellic) To me a rapper who really sounds best when he’s reflective as opposed to attempting big club anthems like fellow Pittsburgh native Wiz Khalifa.
“The End Is Near” works on a simple piano hook looping around jazzy bass and drums. It’s subtle and builds only slightly, perfect to showcase these meticulous flows. Check it out below:
